The deep jungle can be an intimidating place. Home to bird-eating spiders, deadly jaguars, and fierce natives, most ordinary folks wouldn’t last more than a day. Fortunately, the jungle also holds plenty of swingable vines, feastable roots & berries, and the great Scarlet Macaw.

Label boss Claude VonStroke’s first record on mothership is an ode to this majestic bird. In the original version, ominous strings support a complicated percussive ecosystem of coconuts, bananas, and crocodile spines. The swinging jungle techno is also punctuated by a sparse series of analogue outbursts. Scarlet Macaw Unstrung takes the jumpy workout a step further, stripping the strings and emphasizing the raw energy of the bare drums. Both versions show an unexpected deeper side of VonStroke that has popped up lately on his remixes of “Warpaint” (Hussle) and “Pitch It” (Connaisseur).

Edgar Dirksen’s star is on the rise. Well known from Neuton to Cocoon as everybody’s friend, he follows up his 2007 release on Weave Music with the retro-tinged Scarlet Macaw Remix, guiding the tune back to civilization through a maze of icy decompression chambers.

Alberne tragische Samplestrings bis hinunter in die Basswelten, abenteuerliche Breaks mit Soundeffekten, die selbst den daddeligsten mit seinen Händen unbewusst dem Rest des Körpers Luft zu wedelnden Raver dazu bringen wird, aufzuhorchen. Die typischen Vogelsounds gibts natürlich auch, und ich meine irgendwo ein verzogenes “Hallelujah” entdeckt zu haben. Danach erst mal ab zum Therapeuten. Die zweite Version des Tracks ist ein balearischer Oldschoolacid ohne 303, und der Edgar-Dirksen-Remix klingt wie eine gute Entschuldigung endlich mal deftige Pupssounds auf den Dancefloor loszulassen. Der Kunstgriff liegt dabei darin, den Track kurz vor der erwarteten Eruption in der Mitte zu stoppen und wieder bei Null anzufangen. Sehr stimmig, das alles. Den Track gibt es dann noch mal ohne Streicher und im Edgar-Dirksen-Mix, der zwar auf den Bruch in der Mitte verzichtet, sich ansonsten nahe am Original hält und dem Track aber mehr Räumlichkeit verleiht. Raveline (GER): “Der „Scarlet Macaw“ oder auch ‚Hellroter Ara’ ist mit einer Größe von bis zu 90cm einer der größten Papageien der Welt. Das Claude VonStroke sein neues Mothership-Release nach diesem Flattermann benennt, lässt sich wohl auf die papageiartigen Samples zurückführen, die diesem atmosphärisch- exotisch pluckernden Track, der hölzerne Rhythmusinstrumente mit theatralischen Streicherflächen und garstigen Synthetikbass-Einschüben kombiniert, ein gewisses Dschungelflair verleihen. Als funktionell, ansonsten aber absolut einfallslos, erweist sich die „Unstrung“-Version des Stückes, die auf die Strings verzichtet und sich dafür auf eine Weise an der plöppelnden Holzperkussion austobt, die man so bereits in zahllosen anderen Minimalproduktionen vernehmen durfte, konnte, musste. Edgar Dirksens Bearbeitung orientiert sich sehr stark am Original, wobei er kristallklare und kalt tickernde HiHats in den Vordergrund stellt. Das hallend wiederkehrende Ara-Sample vermittelt leider zunehmend das unangenehme Gefühl, in einer Endlosschleife gefangen zu sein. Für das Original gibt dennoch verdiente:”
